Solar Storage Options
Different premises have different requirements and so it is important to review whether or not a storage solution is beneficial to your needs. Sunstream Energy will review your Solar PV requirements with you and can advise you of the best system to install based on your needs.
Harnessing Energy
Three possible things happen when solar PV panels create power from the sun:
- The energy is used to power the premises
- Excess energy is sent back to the grid
- Energy is stored (Battery and/or hot water)
Battery Basics
A standard battery is usually 5kWh. This is equivilant to 5 units of electricity as it appears on a bill. Mostly a battery is a particular necessity for households where the user is out during the day and then wants to store some of the “free” solar powar generated to use later. In order to have a battery, you will need a Hybrid Inverter.
Battery Information
A standard 5kWh battery is capable of powering light load appliances for a few hours.
Batteries can also be charged cheaply from night rate electricity
We do have options available for systems which would allow you to power your entire premises in the case of a grid outage.
Energy Diverter for Hot Water Basics
An Energy Diverter for Hot Water can be installed in order to divert excess energy not used by the premises to the Hot Water Tank (immersion).
Energy Diverter Information
We largely use a system provided by MyEnergi called an EDDI which is capable of diverting your solar generated power to your hot water tank. This system is managed by an App and can be set on timer. It is often worth exploring a timer for your current heating system as first step, this is a option we discuss with all of our customers based on usage and needs.
For example if you have an electric showere and dishwasher – is it worth diverting energy to hot water tank, when you could potentially be selling that energy back to the grid?
We also have upgraded gateway systems available which can also be used to divert energy to hot water.
